A Love for Handmade Decor
Hi, I’m Jill.
Thanks to the military, we’ve lived in some beautiful, historic towns, such as Williamsburg and Charleston. Wandering into artisan studios, I discovered handmade ceramics, baskets, and metalwork. As an artist, I enjoyed learning about their creation and began to appreciate and collect handmade American crafts. Each unique piece reflects the artist. Their story becomes a part of our story, and I love having them in our home.
Inspired, Handmade Design
Inspiration means to “breathe life into.”
There is something special about handmade design. I believe the maker puts a bit of their soul into their work. Inspiration means to “breathe life into.” When creating handmade decor for someone, I hope my inspired work gives the recipient a bit of joy.
You do the same when selecting handmade items for your home or as a gift. Having handmade decor in your home adds personal style to your spaces. Celebrating a new birth or birthday with a sweet, handmade gift lets friends and family know you put a lot of thought into the gesture.
That Creative Impulse
I’ve always been passionate about art and studied drawing and printmaking in college. To be happy, I must be creative daily and frequent places like my studio, our gardens (a great source of inspiration), or the kitchen. I rearrange decor with the seasons, and compose vignettes everywhere. It’s no wonder a favorite quote of mine is, “You brush your teeth, you make art.” So true for us creative types!
Where There’s a Will…
As our children began extracurricular activities and I drove and waited for them, my interest in fabrics and hand-sewn details grew. Away from my studio, I have time to add hand-sewn decoration to items. Can any of you relate? I have waited with many people who enjoy knitting and crocheting. When I joined our daughter’s ballet company guild, I created more items and adored setting up our guild’s boutique displays.
Finally, I combined all this experience to start The Fluffy Swan, and, as the saying goes, “The rest is history.”
