Picture Books and Points of View
Having taught preschool for eight years, it’s no surprise I love teaching little children. I’m also a fan of children’s literature and illustration. There is something so pleasant about reading aloud and sharing the pictures with little ones. Children are so thoughtful, their comments and ideas so creative. Looking at some of my favorite picture books inspired me to sew some storybook cottage, house-shaped pillows.
Young children don’t have preconceived ideas about anything. I saw this reflected in their art. You’d like me to draw a roof on my house? I’m making it candy-striped! The doorknob is heart-shaped because that’s beautiful.
Dreaming of the Beach
Last summer, I was dreaming of a beach trip. Instead, I sewed a little seaside cottage complete with sea oats. I love these coastal grasses. Ocean breezes catch their wispy plumes and gently wave them. I think someone else must have needed a beach visit too. I sent the pillow off to them shortly after listing it in my boutique. Pillows can be dreamy sometimes.
Storybook Cottage Pillows
Here are a few I’ve made. You can see I followed the children’s lead on design. I’ve been collecting new fabric and am full of ideas, so more are on the way.
In case you want to try making one of your own, I made a tutorial (see my Pinterest idea pin below). I don’t mind sharing as, just like us, every pillow will be unique. The sky’s the limit! You don’t have to be little to want one or make one — just young at heart, I guess. 💗
